A below par Ghana was held to a 0-0 draw against Mozambique in their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier match at the Estadio do Zimpeto in Maputo on Sunday. Both teams were looking for a positive result, especially the home team considering they lost 3-1 to the same opponents three days ago.
Ebenezer Assifuah wasted a glorious opportunity to put his team in front with a free header after a good delivery by Harrison Afful. The visitors nearly went close again as Assifuah’s shot went wide and Jonathan Mensah failed to direct his header goalward. The home side created its first chance on goal as Dominguez Pelembe’s header rattled against the bar.
The first half saw both teams failing to find the back of the net although the woodwork played its part in that. The second stanza started at a very slow pace with no team creating clear cut goalscoring chances. What stood out was the Black Stars dominating possession and growing in confidence.
Italian-based midfielder Alfred Duncan failed to convert a sitter and was denied by an onrushing Soares Vitor Soarito. Substitute Helder Pelembe had little power to control Dominguez’s cross to goal as parity remained the order of the day. The last chance of the game fell to Jeff Schlupp but the Leicester City man could not bury the game.
In the end, the Black Mambas managed to earn a point despite being put under constant pressure throughout the game.
