The Golden Lions demolished the EP Kings 51-14 in their Absa Currie Cup clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday. Three tries in the opening 16 minutes of the match gave the Lions the upper hand in the game from start to finish. The home team would never recover as Kwagga Smith posted a hat-trick and Marntiz Boshoff left the pitch after full-time with a 100% kick rate.
From the first kick it became clear that the encounter would be one-sided as Smith dotted down behind the posts in just the first minute for a try. This was after brilliant exchanges from Ruan Combrink, Howard Mnisi and Harold Vorster found Smith with space to exploit. Just five minutes later Courtnall Skosan received possession inside the opposition’s 22. Skosan proceeded to dodge four defenders before he got over the line.
With the visitors dominating possession it came as no surprise when Mnisi got over the try line. In the 13th minute Smith picked up a loose ball inside his own 22 and dashed forward. The back line exchanged passes until Franco Mostert was brought down.
The Joburg union managed to recycle possession and found Mnisi who scored unopposed. Another quick try followed from the Lions just three minutes later after fighting inside the home team’s 22. Ross Cronje broke loose and was eventually brought down, but not before he released an inside pass to Smith who got over the try line.
A weak pass from Cronje was intercepted in the 19th minute by Sylvian Mahuea, who would use the gap found to good use to get over the try line. Scott Van Breda converted. With Johan Ackermann’s men applying pressure, Luke Watson and his boys where pinged at the scrum six minutes from the break.
Boshoff slotted the penalty between the posts. At half-time the Lions were in an impressive 31-7 lead. After 10 minutes in the second stanza, the Kings found themselves pinged at scrum time again.
Again Boshoff slotted the penalty. From the restart Brent Janse Van Rensburg’s men surged forward. After being stopped a few times, Simon Kerrod collected possession and proceeded to get over the line.
Van Breda successfully converted. Michael Van Vuuran was caught offside in the 58th minute and Boshoff gladly added the three points. Then 11 minutes later Smith completed his hat-trick.
He received the pass on the side, ran straight and hard to get over the line. In the 77th minute Anthony Volmink got his name onto the score sheet to round off a brilliant day for his team.
