Bidvest Wits beat Maritzburg United 2-1 in their Absa Premiership encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday. Gavin Hunt’s men were out of the blocks quick as they took control of the possession early on in the game as they looked to grab the three points to keep the pressure on the log leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns. There were no chances of note in the opening exchanges with both sides restricted to long range efforts.
The Clever boys the grabbed the lead as a brilliant cross found Daine Klate ghosting in at the back post and he made no mistake in heading home on 31 minutes. The second half started off with Maritzburg pushing to get back into the game as they saw a number of chances go just wide. The game burst into life on 82 minutes when a deflected cross found Gregory Maasdorp and he managed to slide the ball through Moeneeb Josephs’ legs to level the scores.
United then had a chance to win the game as a cross found Philani Zulu but his glancing header went just wide on 85 minutes. Then in the first minute of added time James Keene somehow managed to miss as a cross that found him inside the six-yard box and he steered it past the post with one of the misses of the season. Keene then turned from villain to hero as a cross found him on the penalty spot and he headed the ball it into the ground and past the keeper on 95 minutes to grab the three points for Hunt’s men.
Wits managed to keep themselves in the title race with the late winner which will give them great confidence going forward.
