Kovsies On Song Against Off-Key UCT

Vrystaat!  It’s not hard to imagine a chorus of Kovsies supporters evoking the name of their beloved province after their side defeated UCT by 29 runs at the Ibbies Oval on Friday afternoon.  And so they should, for this was a clinical display by Kovsies to start their weekend with a smile.  Cue the music.

Kovsies set off by emulating the crescendo of a Meatloaf power ballad, thunderously hitting high-note after high, with Wihan Victor intent on proving that he’ll do anything for a boundary …  even that.  It got him stumped for 38 off 20.  The boys from Bloem immediately had to change their tune as the dangerous Leus Du Plooy was caught by Jordan Leppan off David Geard’s bowling.  Incidentally, his score resembled Mr Loaf’s figure most: 0.

The loss of another wicket subdued the scoring a bit, but after ten overs they were trotting along at a more than healthy 8.8 runs an over – 88/3.  Jacobus Dreyer (39 off 36) and Siplamandla Mavanda (40 off 30) both made telling contributions to guide their side to 172/5.  For UCT David Geard was the pick of the bowlers.

He took three wickets off three overs at a relatively stingy – compared to the rest – economy rate of 5.5.   If Kovsies started with a crescendo, it was a decrescendo for UCT who lost their first wicket without a run next to their name.  It looked to be a long afternoon for UCT who just couldn’t get the scoreboard ticking over.

After four overs they were 16/1 needing a run-rate of a fraction short of ten.  After ten overs they were 60/2 while the required rate was 11.  UCT never managed to get the necessary momentum going to pose any serious threat.  Tissiman Chiecktey (38), Hillio De Abreu (50) and Stuart Cox (34) were the resistance force in a lost cause.
