The Kolkata Knight Riders saw off the Dolphins in the Champions League T20 by 36 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday. Kolkata won the toss but were 25/1 in the fourth over when Gautam Gambhir was bowled by Robbie Frylinck (1/29) for 12. It was 34/2 when Jacques Kallis was castled by Craig Alexander (1/36) for just 6 and it looked like the KwaZulu-Natal side could be in for an upset.
However Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey had other ideas. The pair added an unbeaten 153 runs to post 187/2. Uthappa hammered 85 from 55 balls including 13 fours.
Pandey clubbed five fours and five sixes on his way to a destructive 76 off only 47 deliveries. In reply the South Africans were 6/2 after eight balls. Cameron Delport was out for a duck when he was caught by Gambhir off Yusuf Pathan. Cody Chetty was gone for 1 when he was caught by Sunil Narine off Andre Russell (1/17).
Morne Van Wyk and Vaughan Van Jaarsveld attempted to rebuild the innings until Van Jaarsveld was stumped by Uthappa off Piyush Chawla (1/19) for 19. Four runs later Van Wyk was back in the hut for 34. The skipper hit five fours and a six in his 28-ball innings before he was caught by Pandey off Pathan (2/25).
Andile Phehlukwayo was next to go but not before he smashed 37 off 18 balls, including six fours and a maximum. Phehlukwayo was bowled by Narine, who would then dismiss Frylinck for 6. Frylinck was caught by Chawla.
Khaya Zondo was next to go when he was also caught by Chawla off Narine (3/33) for 32. Zondo hit a four and a six in his 25 ball innings. Jonathan Vandiar was Kuldeep Yadav’s (1/30) first victim when he fell for 1, caught by Suryakumar Yadav.
Kyle Abbott (5 not out) and Prenelan Subrayen (7 not out) stayed put until the end of the innings but Lance Klusener’s men could only muster 151/8 and will depart India with yet another defeat.
