Kolkata Convince Against Chennai

A superb half century from Robin Uthappa helped the Kolkata Knight Riders to an impressive 7 wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday.  The Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field.  The hosts got off to a horrid start as the first wicket fell in the first ball, as Ryan ten Doeschate’s stunning catch helped Pat Cummins claim the wicket of Dwayne Smith. Suresh Raina (8) cameoed before Faf De Plessis (20) joined Brendon McCullum (32) at the crease, and the two formed a solid partnership before both were dismissed in quick succession by Brad Hogg’s lethal bowling.

The Super Kings’ batting was in tatters, and it got worse when captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (1) was dismissed by Piyush Chawla as the Super Kings were 72/5 after 6.5 overs.  Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja were the new partnership and produced a calm and effective batting display to stem the fall of wickets, putting on 48 runs before Bravo was dismissed by Andre Russell.  Hogg claimed two more wickets through Jadeja (24) and Pawan Negi (27) and the wickets kept falling as Stephen Fleming’s men completed their 20 overs with a score of 165/9.

Captain Gautam Gambhir (19) and Uthappa began the innings for the Knight Riders before the former was dismissed by Mohit Sharma.  Manish Pandey (3) and Suryakumar Yadav (2) had short-lived cameoes as the Knights were 57/3 after 9.1 overs.  Russell (55 not out) joined Uthappa (80 not out) at the crease and the two produced a scintillating partnership, putting together a staggering 135 runs as the Kolkata Knight Riders won by 7 wickets, avenging the 2 run loss they suffered at the hands of Chennai just two days ago.
