Kolkata Knight Riders outplayed the Kings XI Punjab by 28 runs to reach the 2014 Indian Premier League (IPL) final at Eden Garden’s on Wednesday. Punjab won the toss and chose to field. The Knight Riders lost their skipper Gautam Gambhir (1) early off the bowling of Mitchell Johnson (2/31) leaving his side 2/1.
Manish Pandey (21) joined Robin Uthappa (42) at the crease and put on a 65 run partnership to put their side in control before they both departed leaving KKR on 67/3. Yusuf Pathan (20) and Shakib Al Hasan (18) were the new men at the crease but didn’t last long departing in quick succession. The next pair at the crease, Ryan ten Doeschate and Umesh Yadav, took them to 113/5 before a brief suspension of play due to rain.
Not long after the rain delay Yadav (20) was dismissed by Karanveer Singh (3/40) followed by ten Doeschate (17) and the final wicket to fall was Sunil Narine (0) as the men from Kolkata ended their 20 overs on 163/8.
In reply the Kings XI Punjab lost Virender Sehwag (2) early on leaving them 5/1. Manan Vohra (26) and Wriddhiman Saha (35) got them to 39/1 before they both departed along with Glen Maxwell (6) leaving them on 55/1. The men in red struggled to put together any partnerships and get runs which showed as they lost a flourish of wickets; David Miller (8) was clean bowled by Piyush Chawla (1-23), Akshar Patel (2) was run out, Rishi Dhawan (14) was stumped and the skipper George Bailey (26) mistimed one straight to Pandey to leave them on 134/8.
Kings XI ended their 20 overs on 135/8 falling 28 runs short. The Kings XI Punjab will now face the winner of the Eliminator between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings in another Qualifier to have a second chance of getting into the 2014 IPL final on Sunday.
