The Kingdom Stars bounced back from their defeat at the hands of the Southern Stings to crush the Limpopo Baobabs 59-31 in their Brutal Fruit Netball Cup match at the Pretoria University Sports Centre on Sunday. The Stars, from KwaZulu-Natal, got off to a quiet start, but built pressure throughout the match. By halftime, they were 30-18 ahead, and continued to dominate. Spar Proteas Bongiwe Msomo at centre and Precious Mthembu at wing attack played a vital role in the Stars’ success, as they kept their shooters well supplied with the ball.
Minky Moahloli proved to be a crowd favourite. She played in the first quarter and was replaced by Nombulelo Shongwe in the second, but when Michelle Segal limped off in the third quarter, Moahloli came back on to rapturous cheers from the crowd, which was solidly behind the coastal team. Every shot at goal received loud applause and the crowd had plenty to cheer about as the Stars’ score rose steadily.
Although they were outplayed, the Baobabs showed plenty of guts and determination, and Sylvia Lebego played so well that she was named player of the match, despite being on the losing side. The Stars have now won two and lost two matches, while the Baobabs have just one win to their credit.
