Kieron Pollard Powers Cape Cobras To Victory

Kieron Pollard hit an unbeaten half-century and struck three crucial blows with the ball to give the Cape Cobras the points from their high-scoring Ram Slam T20 clash with the Titans in Johannesburg on Sunday.  Pollard’s 72 not out from 36 balls took the Nashua Cobras to a total of 207/5 in the second game of Sunday’s triple-header, but his cunning with the ball proved equally important later on when Henry Davids and Dean Elgar put on a record opening stand for the Titans.  The pair had carried The Unlimited Titans to 151/0 when Pollard removed Elgar for 72 in the 15th over and he went on to grab the wickets of Davids and fellow West Indian Darren Sammy.

The timing of Pollard’s wickets did the trick for the Cobras, who were able to squeeze the new batsmen in the death overs and limit the Titans to 193 for four to take a 14-run victory.  The other key contributor to the Cobras total was Richard Levi, who lit up the early stages of the contest with his 81 from 34 balls (seven sixes and seven fours).  Levi got going in the fifth over when he took 28 off Juan De Villiers to go to fifty in 22 balls, and in the next over he took 22 off Rowan Richards to leave the Cobras 79 for one at the end of the power play.

Elgar (3 for 20) was, somewhat surprisingly, the man to pull things back for the Titans as he picked up three wickets in seven deliveries, but Pollard’s blitz and subsequent bowling effort made sure that the Cobras kicked their campaign off with a win.
