Mamelodi Sundowns kept their title hopes alive with a 3-2 victory over Maritzburg United in an exciting Absa Premiership encounter on Saturday. Masandawana and the Team of Choice were out to scoop three points for different reasons as the other looked to cement their place at the summit of the log while the other was only concerned about moving out of the relegation zone. United was trying its luck with counter attacks but nothing seemed fruitful.
Pitso Mosimane’s men dominated most of the play heading to the half hour mark but could they find a goal. In the 35th minute, Downs finally found their goal through Hlompho Kekana. The solid midfielder feasted on a superb cross from Leonardo Castro’s cross. In the second stanza, the match turned from being a one team show to a goal fest. In the 48th minute Khama Billiat drilled a thunderbolt shot past the keeper to give his side a 2-0 lead.
In the 63rd minute, Kekana showed some lovely footwork and made his way into the United box and slotted home for his second of the night. The Brazilians looked well on their way until the 82nd minute when the hosts pulled one back through Evans Rusike. The KZN outfit tried to claw their way back into the match but it was too little too late.
Brian Onyango scored a late goal to make it 3-2 but there was no denying Mosimane’s troops the three points.
