Goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and Siphelele Mthembu secured a 2-0 victory for Kaizer Chiefs against their local rivals Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. The match started off slow with both teams getting a feel of one another. The trend continued throughout the half as both sides had a few chances each with the best attempts coming from Kingston Nkhatha who only managed to send his header off the crossbar for Amakhosi and a Thandani Ntshumayelo strike found the side netting as the first half ended goalless.
After the break Chiefs had the most of the possession with some good play. They put it to good use and were able to find a way through the Buccaneers defence when Bernard Parker found Tshabalala who tapped his shot in from close range to take the lead. The 2012/2013 Absa Premiership champions had the lion’s share of the chances from that point on and looked likely to double their lead with great chances from Parker and Reneilwe Letsholonyane.
However in the final minutes of the match the Sea Robbers looked for an equaliser through Sifiso Myeni and Kermit Erasmus but to no avail. Instead Stuart Baxter’s charges managed to double their lead in added time when Mthembu beat Brighton Mhlongo in goal as they ran out 2-0 victors.
