Kaizer Chiefs beat Golden Arrows 3-1 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday night in the Absa Premiership. Amakhosi were looking to pick up three points after losing the Soweto Derby on Saturday. Chiefs were off to a great start and went ahead in the sixth minute after George Lebese converted a penalty with a low shot into the left corner of the net after Kgotso Moleko was brought down in the box.
Lebese increased the hosts’ lead to two goals in the 23rd minute when his attempt at goal went in off the post on the rebound after Maximilian Mbaeva saved Bernard Parker’s shot. The bad luck for Abafana Bes’thende did not end there. Gladwin Shitolo committed an illegal tackle with his studs up on Lucky Baloyi and was shown a red card later in the first half.
The second half proved to be a thrilling one as both teams were on the attack looking for a goal. Siyabonga Dube scored for Arrows in the 51st minute from just outside the box despite being disadvantaged by the red card shown in the first half bringing the score to 2-1. It looked as if Serame Letsoaka’s lads were going to score again as they were very threatening from the beginning of the second stanza and even more so after Dube’s goal but the Glamour Boys’ defence remained solid.
Steve Komphela’s men eventually restored their two-goal lead when Parker scored from a counter-attack move in which Lebese passed the ball on the wing to Siphelele Mthembu and he proceeded to pass the ball to Parker, where he finished easily. The Soweto giants obtained the three points they were looking for and Lebese was named the man of the match.
