Kagiso Rabada of the Highveld Lions has bagged the Sunfoil Series Sizzler award for the month of February when two rounds of matches were played. The Sizzler award is worth R15 000. Rabada has been instrumental in making the bizhub Highveld Lions the front-runners to win the four-day franchise trophy this season.
He has taken 32 wickets in only six matches this season. This included a 14-wicket haul in the Lions’ 10-wicket victory over the Dolphins which broke Dale Steyn’s record for the most wickets in a domestic first-class match. Other players who came strongly into contention for the award were Andrew Puttick of the Cape Cobras, Ethy Mbhalati of Titans, Dane Paterson of the Cape Cobras and Divan Van Wyk of the Dolphins.
Cricket South Africa General Manager Corrie Van Zyl commented: ‘Congratulations to Kagiso on his Sunfoil sizzler award. He produced unquestionably the performance of the season when he took 9 wickets in an innings and 14 in the match in the Lions victory against the Dolphins that confirmed them as the front runners for the title. It is highly encouraging to see a new breed of fast bowlers emerging on the domestic front this season. In addition to Rabada, Matthew Pillans is another young fast bowler to take 10 wickets in a match recently.’ The South African Cricketers’ Association Most Valuable Player index (SACA MVP) is used as the measuring tool in determining the Sunfoil Sizzler of the Month.
