A Max Gradel goal helped Ivory Coast advance to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Cameroon in Malabo on Wednesday. The game was pretty open from the beginning with both sides searching for the opening goal. The Ivorians had decent chances from Wilfried Bony and Yaya Toure before Gradel opened the scoring for them in the 35th minute. The Cameroonians fought to stay in the match, trying to strike back straight away with chances from Edgar Salli.
After the break Volker Finke’s men looked to find an equaliser and came close with Vincent Aboubakar, who fired a tight footed attempt towards goal but was denied by the Elephants shot stopper. As for Herve Renard’s men they attempted to extend their lead through a Bony attempt from just outside the box but were able to hold on to their slender lead and ran out 1-0 winners. Renard’s side top the group and advanced to the quarters where they will play Algeria.
As for the Indomitable Lions, it is yet another disappointing tournament after last year’s poor showing at the World Cup.
