The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced on Thursday that 1997 Roland Garros champion Iva Majoli will play in the inaugural WTA Legends Event at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. The popular Croat joins Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin and Marion Bartoli in the four-player field. The WTA Legends Event is scheduled for Session 1 (Monday, October 20), Session 4 (Wednesday, October 22) and Session 6 (Thursday, October 23).
The Grand Slam champions will play best-of-three set doubles matches, teaming with a different partner for each session. The legend who accumulates the most points will be crowned WTA Legends Champion. “I’m so excited to be heading to Singapore for the WTA Finals. I have great memories of competing at this incredible event at Madison Square Garden in New York and I know Singapore is going to be a fantastic host city for the WTA’s prestigious season finale. I can’t wait to meet the fans there. I also look forward to playing some great tennis with Martina, Tracy and Marion, and getting to know some of the Rising Stars and Future Stars of women’s tennis,” said Majoli.
“With Iva, Martina, Tracy and Marion, we have a WTA Legends Event that will delight, dazzle and entertain the fans in Singapore. These four women embody the traits that make our WTA stars so inspirational – talent, effort, personality and charisma,” said WTA Chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster. In a career spanning more than a decade Majoli rose as high as Number 4 in the WTA Rankings and won eight tour-level singles titles, famously stunning world Number 1 Martina Hingis, then on a 37 match winning streak, in the final at 1997 Roland Garros. Adding to that Grand Slam triumph were clay court titles at Hamburg and Charleston.
She also enjoyed success indoors, lifting trophies at Zurich, Filderstadt, Tokyo [Pan Pacific], Essen and Hannover as well as a doubles title at Paris [Indoors]. She qualified for the WTA Finals at New York’s Madison Square Garden on four occasions, advancing to the semi-finals in 1996. Majoli represented her native Croatia at the Olympics in 1996 and 2000 and, having been a regular member of the country’s Fed Cup Team, was named national captain in 2012.
Singapore will become the ninth different city to host the WTA Finals following Boca Raton (1972-1973), Los Angeles (1974-1976, 2002-2005), Oakland (1978), New York City (1977, 1979-2000), Munich (2001), Madrid (2006-2007), Doha (2008-2010) and Istanbul (2011-2013). The 2014 WTA Finals will feature the Top 8 singles players in the world competing in a round-robin event, with the winner taking home the Billie Jean King Trophy. Tickets for the general public can be purchased through Sports Hub Tix wtafinals.sportshubtix.sg, the official ticketing partner of the 2014 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SCGlobal.
