South Africa’s Kevin Anderson was a winner on the doubles court at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome on Monday. Anderson teamed up with doubles partner Jurgen Melzer of Austria to see off Marco Cecchinato and Andreas Seppi. Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga managed to oust Ukrainian top-ranked player Alexandr Dolgopolov with a 6-3 7-6 score in the day’s last encounter in the men’s singles.
There was also action in the parallel WTA event. Former world number one Ana Ivanovic was a first round winner. The Serb thrashed local favourite Karin Knapp 6-1, 6-1. Madison Keys, Alize Cornet, Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens were also first round winners at the WTA event at the Foro Italico. Two-time Major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova also enjoyed a straight sets victory in the Italian capital. The Russian saw off compatriot Maria Kirilenko 7-5, 6-0. Wimbledon finalists Sabine Lisicki was an early casualty however. The German was ousted 6-3, 6-3 by former US Open winner Samantha Stosur.
