The Hurricanes left Ellis Park with a 22-8 Vodacom Super Rugby victory against the Lions on Friday. The hosts were doing just fine despite trailing 6-5 due to Ruan Combrinck’s unconverted try being sandwiched by two Beauden Barett penalties. However five minutes before half-time TJ Perenara crossed the line to extend the lead for the visitors.
Marnitz Boshoff would slot a penalty on the stroke of half-time to keep Johan Ackermann’s men in the match, trailing 11-8 at the break. In the second half the Canes would also score 11 points however there would be no contribution from Ackermann’s side. Barett struck 53rd and 74th minute penalties in what was turning out to be a cagey second half.
With virtually no chance of winning the match, the home side conceded an 80th minute try to Matt Proctor as the New Zealanders left Johannesburg with the win.
