The Bulls suffered a 25-20 defeat in their first overseas 2014 Vodacom Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes in Napier on Saturday. The Hurricanes snatched the match in a seesaw battled after leading 16-13 at half time. A series of Beauden Barrett penalties had helped the Canes to keep at bay a gallant Vodacom Bulls fight back and secure victory.
Hurricanes winger, Julian Savea, fashioned some earth-shattering runs, adding superior attacks the Bulls had to keep at bay. The New Zealand side’s persistence paid and the visitors were left wondering. Andre Taylor displayed glimpses of his old form of two seasons ago.
Although Frans Ludeke’s side came back from the interval seeming refreshed, Barrett pushed the Hurricanes further ahead with another penalty. The Pretoria franchise were back to square one and there was no coming back. The Wellington side up four log points for their victory to move to second in the New Zealand Conference and seventh on the overall log.
The Bulls picked up a single bonus point for losing by seven or fewer points and continue to occupy second position in the South African Conference and fourth in the overall standings.
