The Hurricanes whipped the Chiefs 45-8 at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Saturday in a Vodacom Super Rugby clash. Three minutes into the game Gareth Anscombe opened the scoring with a penalty before Andre Taylor ran across the field and scored the first try of the match a minute later. Liam Squire’s try handed the visitors an 8-7 lead in the 14th minute but it would prove to be a false dawn.
Ben Franks and Julian Savea went over to ensure a 21-8 lead at half-time in favour of the hosts who were gearing up to run rampant in the second half. In the second stanza the Canes ran in 24 unanswered points. Ten minutes into the second half Savea scored his second try of the game.
There would be time for Jack Lam and Brad Shields to cross the line to boot as the Wellington franchise ran riot in a 45-8 annihilation of the defending champions.
