Hurricanes Beat Blues

The Hurricanes scored a bonus point try to win 30-23 against the Blues in a Palmerston North thriller in Friday’s early Vodacom Super Rugby action.  The Canes got off to a positive start as they dominated possession from the onset.  Beauden Barrett slotted over a penalty in the fifth minute to put the home side 3-0 ahead.

A brilliant break by Julian Savea saw TJ Perenara go over to score the first try of the match.  Barrett was unable to add the extras.  The Welington franchise looked damaging on attack, but a miraculous intercept by Lolagi Visinia saw him score a 95 metre try.

Ihaia West converted to put them within 4 points.  Winger Frank Halai powered over as he put the men from Auckland in the lead in the 29th minute with West adding the sundries.  With half time emerging, Matt Proctor scored off a spectacular chip kick from Barrett.

The flyhalf converted to give the Canes the edge at the break.  A scrappy start to the second half saw both sides turning over the ball easily.  West got his side back in front with a difficult penalty kick in the 47th minute.

Jamie Joseph’s men struck back through a try by Savea and Barret converted to give his side a five point buffer.  West, being brilliant with the boot, continued kicking them over as the match remained on a knife’s edge.  Some good phases and patience by the Canes saw Savea go over for the bonus point try as the Canes win by seven points.
