The Highveld Lions are raring to get the white-ball cricket season underway as they face the Warriors in their opener for the Momentum One-Day Cup in Potchefstroom. The team had a taste of limited overs when they clinched the Momentum eKasi Cup for the second year running at Dobsonville Cricket Oval and are keen to get good momentum out of the first match in this competition this Sunday. “A season leading up to the ICC World Cup is always a big one in the 50-over format. All teams have players that want to get as much game time in and showcase their talent. This makes for incredibly competitive and thrilling cricket,” commented bizhub Highveld Lions captain Stephen Cook.
“The bowlers and batsmen have had some decent time in the middle during our two Sunfoil Series matches which has proved critical in the past. I am confident that we are ready,” said Cook. The side sees the return of Jean Symes after a hand injury last season but will miss out on Chris Morris, Alviro Petersen and Eddie Leie who are nursing minor injuries. Head Coach, Geoffrey Toyana, commented on these players not being available for selection, “These are three quality players but I know that all players have been training hard and this is another opportunity for the depth of our team to gain experience and be tested.”
The team for Sunday’s match is:
Stephen Cook (Captain), Temba Bavuma (Vice Captain), Quinton De Kock, Neil McKenzie, Aaron Phangiso, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Jean Symes, Thami Tsolekile, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Hardus Viljoen and Rassie Van Der Dussen.
The match starts at 10:00 and gates will be open from 09:00. Tickets cost R50 for adults and R40 for kids and will be available at the gate.
