Stellenbosch golfer Garrick Higgo claimed his first victory on this year’s Glacier Junior Series when he won the A Division of the Richard Sterne Tournament in a four-man playoff at the Westlake Golf Club on Sunday. The 14-year-old student from Paul Roos High School finished regulation play with a one-under-par 71 and tied for the lead with Deniz Palanduz, Altin van der Merwe and Luke Trocado.
Higgo could well have spared himself the trouble of a playoff were it not for his two bogeys in his final three holes of regulation play. A bogey at the first playoff hole, the par-four 10th, was still good enough to keep Higgo in contention. And he took the title with a par on the second playoff hole – the par-four 18th.
“I really didn’t think the bogey on 10 would be good enough to keep me in the playoff, especially after I duffed my second shot. And then on 18 I hit a good drive and a good second shot to about 20 feet, and two-putted,” Higgo said. Higgo said he drew heavily on his experience from winning the Country Youth Classic in Illinois in the United States last year. “That win gave me a lot of confidence, and the experience of competing against an international field.”
The Westlake tournament also featured the first hole-in-one on this year’s series when Abduraghmaan Adams aced the par-three third hole.
