The Highveld Lions required just one session on the final day to wrap up victory over the Warriors in their Sunfoil Series encounter at Wanderers, as Hardus Viljoen recorded his second straight 10-wicket match haul. Viljoen took two of the six wickets that the Lions required on the last day to finish with figures of 4/79 in the second innings, as the Warriors were bowled out for 219 to lose by 203 runs. With match figures of 10/123, Viljoen has now taken 20 wickets in two Sunfoil Series games at an average of 14 and a strike rate of under 25 deliveries per wicket.
Although Colin Ackermann and Clyde Fortuin survived Viljoen’s opening three-over spell as the Warriors resumed on 104/4 in pursuit of an unlikely 423 for victory, Dwaine Pretorius broke their 78-run stand when he had Fortuin caught behind for 39. Pumelela Matshikwe trapped Simon Harmer lbw, but Andrew Birch decided to fight fire with fire as he hit 21 from just 26 balls before a Viljoen short ball proved too much for him. The writing was on the wall for the Warriors thereafter, and Ackermann’s stand came to an end when he was trapped lbw for 89 by Nono Pongolo before Viljoen wrapped up the innings to complete his 10-wicket haul.
The Lions took 17.82 points from the victory, putting them second on the table where they trail the Titans by a little more than three points after two rounds.
