Griquas earned their first of the Absa Currie Cup season thanks to a 21-18 win over the Sharks in Durban on Saturday. GWK Griquas were the first to gain points. Thomas Du Toit was penalised for offside play.
Gouws Prinsloo scored a penalty making the score 3-0. Another penalty by Prinsloo doubled their points. Fred Zeilnga got the Cell C Sharks’ first points by slotting a penalty.
Prinsloo added another three points after Paul Jordaan was penalised. Lourens Adriaanse scored the first try of the match making the score 9-8. Prinsloo landed his fourth three pointer thereafter and the men from Kimberley’s lead was extended when Prinsloo scored a fifth penality making it 15-8.
Etienne Oosthuizen was penalised after he failed to roll away after a tackle on Hilton Lobberts. The first half ended 15-8 in favour of the visitors. The second half started at a slow pace.
The hosts opted to take a scrum from a resulting penalty as Prinsloo was pinged for offside play on defence. The Sharks front row was penalised for illegal scrummaging and a yellow card was given out in the 53rd minute. Ederies Arendse was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul.
Brad MacLeod-Henderson’s men scored a penalty by Lionel Cronje. Prinsloo would score another penalty after the Sharks were penalised for illegal scrumming. A try by Du Toit saw the Sharks close the score gap slightly and the conversion by Cronje saw the Sharks catch up, making the score 18-18.
However a drop goal by Francois Brummer ended the match 21-18.
