Manchester United and Chelsea played out to a 0-0 draw in their English Premier League encounter at Old Trafford on Monday. The hosts came out of the gates running with the bulk of the possession and a perfect chance to draw first blood when Juan Mata took a shot from distance only to rattle the woodwork. The visitors hit back with an opportunity of their own as their skipper John Terry headed one goalwards which was tipped over the crossbar by David De Gea.
The Old Trafford faithful was treated to a much improved United performance as they played with attacking intent and were keeping possession while going forward. Close chances from Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney closed out the half as it remained goalless. In the second stanza it was the Blues who started well as De Gea pulled off two back-to-back saves to deny the visitors a chance to open the scoring.
In a matter of minutes the home side had what could be said to be the chance of the game as Martial came screaming down the touchline and whipped one in to Ander Herrera in the middle. The Spaniard had a simple tap-in that went toward goal but Thibaut Courtois put his body on the line to stop the ball from crossing the line. After the 90 minutes plus added time neither side was able to break the deadlock as the game ended goalless.
The draw sees the under fire Louis Van Gaal’s charges remain in sixth and Guus Hiddink’s side move up to 14th place.
