Ghana edged Cameroon 1-0 in the African Women’s Championship in Namibia on Saturday but it was not enough to progress to the semi-finals. South Africa’s 5-1 annihilation of Algeria ensured Banyana Banyana would progress at the expense of the Ghanaians. The Cameroonians came into this match as the favourites as they were leaders of Group B.
It proved to be a tough game as the first 15 minutes saw no goals. Both teams put up a good fight as they looked to bag a win for different reasons. The Black Queens moved forward early as they looked for an opening.
The Cameroon defence were on their toes as the kept the Ghanaians away from their goal. Ghana did not slow down on the attack as they kept firing shots with no luck. The first half ended goalless.
The second half started with fire and finally something happened. Elizabeth Cudjoe put the ball in the back of the net. It could have been two but for a free kick from a good position which hit the wall and went over the post.
Both teams had a fair amount of chances to create more goals, but it was not meant to be. Ghana won the match 1-0 but it was mere consolation at the end of the day.
