The World Boxing Council has agreed in principal that the winner of the fight between WBC Interim Champion Gennady Golovkin and WBC Silver Champion Martin Murray, on February 21st in Monte Carlo, will go on to fight absolute champion Miguel Cotto. The Puerto Rican has a voluntary defence in May, against an opponent yet to be named. Golovkin, also has to defeat Murray, who he’s described as “talented, tough, capable and strong”.
The Kazakhstan boxer’s promoter Tom Loeffler, who’s the Managing Director of K2 Promotions, said that his fighter is already WBA middleweight champion, but he also wants to win the famous green and gold belt. Golovkin took a big step towards that achievement, with a second round KO against Marco Antonio Rubio to win the Interim belt. The Kazakh has stopped 28 of his 31 opponents.
