Chris Gayle top scored as he single-handedly lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore towards a three wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League encounter at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. The Royal Challengers won the toss and put their opponents in to bat. The Kolkata openers Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa stood firm upfront posing a strong partnership of 81 runs to led their side to 77/0 before the latter departed for 35.
The skipper continued his form bringing up a fifty before he was caught at deep mid-wicket to leave the Knight Riders on 101/1. A mini batting collapse ensued when they lost Suryakumar Yadav (11), Manish Pandey (23), Yusuf Pathan (3) and Shakib Al Hasan (0) as they ended their 20 overs scoring 177 runs for the loss of six wickets. In reply RCB got off to a slow start losing their first wicket of Virat Kohli with 23 runs on the board.
Their other opener Gayle anchored the other end of the pitch bringing up a half century but watched as his partners at the other end were sent back to the change room. Bangalore lost Dinesh Karthik (6), Mandeep Singh (6), AB De Villiers (28) and Darren Sammy (7) as they found themselves on 119/5. Sean Abbott hung around with the established Gayle and saw them to 132/5 before he was run out for one with the Bengaluru outfit requiring a further 46 runs off 24 balls.
However it was the Gayle Force (96) who continued on his way to get his side over the line but his run stopped short when he was dismissed four runs short of a century with his side on 171/7. Despite his dismissal he did lead his side to within eight runs of winning the game which was done by Abu Nechim who hit the winning runs as the Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated the defending champions by three wickets.
