France ensured top spot in Group E at the FIFA World Cup™ following a 0-0 draw against against Ecuador on Wednesday at the Maracana in Rio De Janiero. As a result Les Bleus move to the Last 16 while the South Americans head for the airport. As early as the second minute of the game La Tri went on the attack down the left flank but to no avail.
The first shot at goal came from Antoine Griezmann’s boot from 20 yards out but his ball went wide by inches. The French kept the ball in their attacking half but had trouble getting past the defence. A long ball came in for Enner Valencia as he chased it and took a shot from a difficult angle which went wide.
Karim Benzema managed to beat a defender and took a powerful shot which was saved in a first half that was destined to finish without a goal. The second half started with Ecuadorian captain Antonio Valencia shown a red card for showing his studs in a 50-50 situation. Despite being a man down the South Americans continued attacking in search of that elusive goal that could send them into the next round.
Didier Deschamps made a substitution with Raphael Varane coming on for Mamadou Sakho. Benzema’s attempt at goal failed as the ball went straight to the keeper. Moments later the Real Madrid striker headed to the goal posts again but his shot was deflected and from a corner no goal was conceded. Paul Pogba’s header went inches wide of the post as he tried to take a shot as France continued to press.
Ecuador’s dreams faded as they were not able to score that much-needed goal which sees them go home and they will rue the 2-1 loss to Switzerland in their opening match, especially since they were 1-0 up.
