Danny Welbeck scored the winner to help Arsenal knock out his former side Manchester United with a 2-1 victory in their FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Monday. It took the visitors 25 minutes before they opened the scoring when an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlian pass found an unmarked Nacho Monreal who fired his shot past David De Gea to take the lead. However their lead was short lived as United equalised when Wayne Rooney guided a Angel Di Maria cross into the back of the net.
Back on level terms, both teams continued to match each other stride for stride. As the end of the first half drew nearer the home side showed some dominance with two great chances on the bounce from Di Maria and Rooney but were not able to get that advantage to go into the break as the half ended all square at 1-1. In the second stanza both teams exchanged attacking opportunities until a few minutes past the hour mark when a mistake from Antonio Valencia forced De Gea to come out too far and miss the ball to allow Welbeck to give the Gunners the lead.
The hosts looked to find an equaliser immediately and they had a great chance from a Di Maria free kick which was flicked on from Michael Carrick towards Chris Smalling however the English defender was not able to direct his shot towards goal. The London club almost sealed the victory when Santi Cazorla’s volley came screaming towards goal but the Spanish shotstopper stuck out a hand to deny them. With under 13 minutes to go Di Maria went to ground without any contact from Aaron Ramsey and was booked for simulation however the Argentine was not happy with that decision which led to him putting his hands on the referee Michael Oliver which resulted in a second yellow leaving the Red Devils a man down in the remaining minutes.
Louis Van Gaal’s men searched for a way through but came up short as the game ended 2-1 to Arsene Wenger’s charges.
