Athletics South Africa announces its second national event of the year, the ASA Marathon Championships, which will be held in East London next week Saturday 20 February 2016. The Championships will be hosted through ASA province, Boland Athletics. Last year’s Championships were incorporated into the PetroSA Marathon held at Mossel Bay, Western Cape.
Three times winner (including 2010 & 2012) Coolboy Ngamole won the Men’s event in 2 hours 17 minutes 26 seconds, beating former champion Benedict Moeng into second place by one minute. The Women’s race was won by Zehara Datu of Ethiopia in 2:46, who was followed by country girl Tsehay Maru 2:47:44. Makhosazana Mhlongo was the first South African at third position (2:48:16).
Entry registration for this year’s road race closed on Monday. ASA president Aleck Skhosana says: ‘This year’s ASA Marathon Championships promises to be another great event which will see a number of athletes contesting the Male and Female races. It will be a test of strength for some and a contest for glory for others. We hope for a good number of entries, young and old. So, good luck to all runners and fun seekers alike.’
