The Dolphins will welcome back a trio of players as they look to bounce back from a disappointing defeat and win at least three of their remaining five Sunfoil Series games, starting with Thursday’s encounter with the Knights in Durban. Although Ryan McLaren remains out of action with a hamstring problem, Vaughn Van Jaarsveld and Khaya Zondo will return from injury and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo is available again after completing his exams. The three players were absent in last week’s defeat to the Lions which left the Dolphins 44 points adrift of the league leaders but with a game in hand, and their return has given captain Morne Van Wyk reason for optimism going forward.
Van Wyk says: ‘I sit in our change room and I look at the squad that we’ve got and there are some phenomenal players and amazing talent, and I get excited when I think what it will be like if we can combine it all on the field and play the best cricket that we can. I don’t think we’ve done that yet, but if we can do that and win three out of the next five then who knows what’s going to happen.” The Chevrolet Knights will be strengthened by the return of Quinton Friend after he passed a fitness test on Tuesday, but Dillon Du Preez has not recovered sufficiently for this round of games. Sarel Cilliers’ side are less than a point behind the Dolphins but have played a game more, and the coach feels that if they can improve their batting then they could string a series of positive results together.
Cilliers says: ‘Our bowlers did perform well over the weekend against the Cobras, but with the batters we had nine good starts, and if we can convert that into scores that give us an opportunity to set a first-innings lead, that will be quite important. The Lions and Titans have played good cricket and deserve to be where they are, so the rest of us are playing catch-up. We still have matches against the teams that are above us in the log, so our destiny is in our hands.’
