Danie Van Tonder claimed his second victory in what is shaping up to be a dream season for him on the Sunshine Tour when he won the Vodacom Origins of Golf presented by Samsung at Euphoria Golf Estate on Friday. Van Tonder closed with a 70 for a total of 12 under par, giving him a one-stroke victory over Tyrone Ferreira. Van Tonder led going into the final round. Ulrich Van Den Berg made the first run at his lead and took it briefly with a tremendous birdie putt on the sixth. But he was unable to sustain this and finished third on 10 under.
Ferreira then came with a charge of six consecutive birdies over the turn, but missed a short birdie chance on 18 to finish on 12 under. That left Van Tonder to par the last for victory. “It was quite tense out there and I knew the guys would be coming for me. But it was fun. I knew I had to just keep calm and be patient. I waited 11 holes for a birdie, so patience was key,” said Van Tonder.
He now moves into second place on the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit behind England’s Ross Fisher. But technically he is first as Fisher has only played two tournaments here this season and not the minimum of seven to qualify for the Order of Merit. “I just want to stay in this position and win the Order of Merit this year,” said a confident Van Tonder, who has been in incredible form this year, having not missed a cut. And he’s hoping to build on this form with a few more wins before the lucrative summer portion of the tour tees off towards the end of the year. “This is the 11th year of this series and it’s so important for us because it keeps us competitive in the winter,” he said.
The amateur competition was won by Thulani Ntobela with 125 points. He led the five amateurs who qualified for the final of this pro-am series at the end of the year.
