Suresh Raina top scored with 109 not out as Chennai Super Kings defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets to be crowned the 2014 Champions League T20 winners in Bangalore on Saturday. CSK won the toss and put KKR into bat. Their openers Robin Uthappa and Gautam Gambhir put on a 91-run opening stand before they lost Uthappa (39) who was stumped by MS Dhoni off the bowling of Pawan Negi.
Jacques Kallis joined Gambhir but only managed one run before he nicked one to cover point to hand Negi (5/22) his second wicket of the match. Gambhir managed to add a further 26 runs to his half century before he was dismissed at long off leaving his side on 136/3. Manesh Pandey was joined by Yusuf Pathan and together they got their score to 159/3 before Pandey (32) departed.
The wickets of Ryan ten Doeschate (0) and Yadav (0) followed in quick succession in the penultimate the over. A good knock from Pathan (20 not out) however helped the men from Kolkata to 180/6 at the end of their 20 overs. In reply Chennai lost the wicket of Dwayne Bravo (8) in the first over when he was deceived by a Pat Cummins (1/32) delivery that snuck under his bat and crashed into his stumps as they found themselves on 9/1.
However Raina and Brendon McCullum rescued their side as they steadied the innings putting on an 118-run stand with Raina bringing up a half century to take their score to 127/1 before McCullum (39) was dismissed by Pathan. Skipper Dhoni (23 not out) walked out to the crease and with Raina (109 not out) put on another well constructed partnership and Raina converted his half century as they ran out winners by 8 wickets to be crowned Champions League T20 victors.
