The Crusaders thrashed the Lions 34-6 in Christchurch on Saturday in their Super Rugby encounter, picking up a bonus point in the process. Early pressure from the Saders set up a try scoring opportunity as Andy Ellis went over to score the first five-pointer of the match. Dan Carter slotted over to give the home side a 7-0 lead in the fifth minute.
Carter made no mistake as he converted two more penalties to extend the lead to 13-0. Elton Jantjies managed to score the first points of the match for the visitors when he slotted over a penalty in the 26th minute. Both teams created several scoring opportunities as the teams went into the break with the men from Johannesburg trailing 13-3.
The men from New Zealand made too many handling errors after the break, with the away side capitalising through a penalty from Jantjies. The Joburg franchise suffered a big blow in the 50th minute when Julian Redelinghuys was shown a yellow card. Ill-discipline by Johan Ackermann’s men saw the hosts add a penalty try to their score.
Kieron Fonotia evaded a last-gasp tackle to score a try down the touchline in the 57th minute and Carter added the extras before the bonus try arrived through Kieran Read in the 76th minute. Carter made no mistake as he added the two additional points to secure a 34-6 victory.
