Cronje Wins Second Tourney

Boland golf star Daniel Cronje won the second tournament on this year’s Glacier Junior Series when he claimed the Sunshine Tour tournament at King David Mowbray Golf Club on Sunday.  The 15-year-old Cronje signed for a three-under-par 69 to win his first Glacier Junior Series title by two strokes over Luca Filippi.  It was a sweet victory for Cronje who last year finished second to Filippi in a Glacier Junior Series tournament at Atlantic Beach.

Cronje says:  ‘It’s great to win for the first time. I’m really going to enjoy this.  It’s probably the biggest win of my career.  I love the competiveness of the Glacier Junior Series.  It’s great to come down those final holes and you know it’s tight with somebody like Luca. It’s great to have that competition.’  Cronje didn’t start well when he bogeyed his first two holes, but the young golfer retained his composure.  He says:  ‘I started off a bit slow but made some good putts towards the end of my round.  After those two early bogeys I knew there were birdie holes coming up with the par fives and that if I could get it to level par after nine I could play well on the second nine. That’s what I did.’

The win was a great endorsement for the Theewaterskloof Golf Academy, which opened its doors in 2014.  Cronje moved from Paarl to join the academy.  He says:  ‘I’ve got my Boland colours and my target now is to work hard to get my South African colours.’
