Chippa United lost 4-3 to Jomo Cosmos in the Absa Premiership on Sunday afternoon at Olen Park. The game started well for Cosmos with early attacks and Charlton Mashumba made his first move in the fourth minute of the game but Chippa’s goalkeeper Daniel Akepyi made a good save. After that both teams attacked looking for a goal with no luck.
In the 20th minute, Mashumba finally scored the first goal of the match. Ezenkosi continued playing well and attacked until Sandile Zuke was charged for touching the ball inside the box resulting in a penalty to the hosts. Brice Aka took the spot kick in the 27th minute to double the lead.
The Chilli Boys came back during the 30th minute but Lerato Shabangu’s free kick was headed wide. The Potcheftroom-based side came back immediately with Pentjie Zulu scoring the third goal of the match during the 33rd minute. At that stage it looked like a rout was on the cards for Jomo Sono’s side.
United failed to give in though and this resulting in their first goal of the match when Rhulani Manzini scored a goal in the 38th minute. In the 42nd minute Sipho Mngomezulu netted yet another goal to send the home side into half-time with a healthy 4-1 lead. When the second half started the visitors attacked with no success at first.
Both teams picked up their pace as they attacked trying for a goal but their shots were going wide and the defenders were working well. The Eastern Cape side then managed to score a goal during the 71st minute by Aristide Bance. Roger Sikhakhane’s side continued to press and they were making Cosmos’ defense work very hard.
The Port Elizabeth club was rewarded in the 86th minute when William Twala slotted the third to ensure a nervy finish to the match. Cosmos held on for the 4-3 win and afterwards Sono said: ‘It’s about time. I knew this was coming because we created a lot of chances during the first and second half.’
