Cobras And Knights End In High-Scoring Draw

Justin Kemp’s half-century on his return to the Cape Cobras side was the highlight of an otherwise forgettable final day as their Sunfoil Series match against the Knights petered out to a draw.  Kemp’s last outing for his franchise was during the Champions League T20 in September, but he celebrated his first-class comeback by scoring 73 as the Nashua Cape Cobras were bowled out for 514.  Although the final wicket arrived halfway through the day’s scheduled play, the two captains shook on a draw given that there was no chance of a result, with only the first innings having been completed.

The Cobras began the day on 388/6, with Dane Vilas on 64 and Kemp on 11, but lost Vilas to the very first ball when he was bowled by Werner Coetsee.  Any sense of impending final-day drama was quickly quashed by Kemp and Rory Kleinveldt (35) though, as they added 69 for the eighth wicket, with Kleinveldt hitting a couple of sixes.  After Kleinveldt had become Quinton Friend’s first scalp and Kemp had fallen to Michael Erlank, Coetsee ended the innings when he bowled Dane Piedt to record figures of 4/85.

Pite Van Biljon was named man of the match for his 175 in the Chevrolet Knights’ total of 570/5 declared.  The Knights took 6.48 points from the game to sit third on the table after playing four games, while the Cobras took 4.54 and remain bottom after playing just two matches so far.
