Chris Van Heerden has added the IBF International welterweight belt to his CV after a split decision victory over Cecil McCalla at Madison Square Garden on Friday. The Heat, trained by Freddie Roach, made his New York debut against the previously unbeaten Maryland native but came out on top. As a result, the 27-year old moves to a career record of 22-1-1.
Judges Arthur McCante Junior scored the bout 97-93 while John McKaie thought it was closer at 96-94. Van Heerden, Roach and the southpaw’s manager Donna Keegan Avery might wonder what bout Ed Scunzio was watching, after the third judge scored the fight 99-91 in favour of the American. This was the Meyerton man’s third win in three bouts in the United States of America since moving Stateside some two years ago.
