A hat-trick from Chris Ciriello saw Australia defeat India 4-0 in the Commonwealth Games men’s hockey gold medal match on Sunday. The Australians were on the attack from the first whistle and put pressure on their opponents trying to search for an opening goal. Graham Reid’s men got the breakthrough from a penalty corner put in by Daniel Beale finding Ciriello who put his shot past the Indian keeper.
The Kookaburras extended their lead through Ciriello once again from a penalty corner from Matt Gohdes as the teams went into the half-time break with Australia leading 2-0. In the second half both teams took turns attacking each other’s goals and it was the Aussies who scored first as Ciriello completed his hat-trick followed by a goal from Eddie Ockenden who latched on to a pass from Kieran Govers in front of goal.
The Indians had a chance through Chandanda Nikkin Thimmaiah but his shot was sent wide of the goal as Terrence Walsh’s charges continued to struggle to break through their opponents’ defence. India had a video referral in the final two minutes and were unsuccessful as the defending champions won 4-0 to take the gold medal.
