Chippa United shocked Orlando Pirates 1-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the Absa Premiership on Saturday. It was a high-paced ten minute period from Chippa which resulted in the early goal. David Zulu gave the Chilli Boys a seventh minute with a beautiful goal.
Thandani Ntshumayelo fired a shot from a distance but his ball was way off the mark. Kermit Erasmus took a shot from the edge of the box but the ball went over the crossbar. Thabo Matlaba fired two shots towards the goal minutes apart but Pirates remained behind.
Both Matlaba’s efforts were saved. Oupa Manyisa went down in the box, hoping to be awarded a penalty but the referee waved for play to continue. The Buccaneers had a good opening towards goal as Daine Klate crossed from the right but United’s solid defence cleared the ball.
The defence stayed strong as they stopped Manyisa yards out and cleared the ball as the first half ended with the home side in the lead. The second half began with an attack down the left through Klate but he lost control of the ball. The Sea Robbers had the majority of the ball in the opening ten minutes.
Siyabonga Sangweni was given a yellow card in the process for a foul however. Mpho Makola was substituted by Lehlohonolo Majoro in the 58th minute. Matlaba was booked and will miss his next game for Vladmir Vermezovic’s side.
Pirates had most of the ball but could not make that work to their advantage. Senzo Meyiwa was then booked for arguing with the referee as the frustrations were getting the better of the away side. In three minutes of added time Vermezovic’s side looked to surge forward but it was to no avail.
