The Chiefs defeated the Melbourne Rebels 22-16 in their Vodacom Super Rugby encounter at the Waikato Stadium on Saturday. The Chiefs were on the board early in the game through four Gareth Anscombe penalties, a conversion and a maiden Super Rugby try by Michael Fitzgerald taking them to a 19-0 lead. The men from Waikato began to concede some penalties gifting the Rebels a way into the game through two Jason Woodward three-pointers with the teams heading into half time at 19-6.
The visitors got the first points of the half with a try from Shota Horie to close the gap on the Chiefs taking the score to 19-13. They lost their skipper Scott Higginbotham who was sin binned for a professional foul and the home side stretched their lead with a penalty taking the score to 22-13. The Australians didn’t back down taking the attack to the Chiefs and kicked over a penalty but were not able to upset the the home side who ran out 22-16 winners.
