The Chennai Super Kings got back to winning ways as they defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 27 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Daniel Vettori’s men won the toss and elected to bat. The visitors could only muster up a mere 16 runs before the first wicket fell, as Brendon McCullum was dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the second over.
The partnership of Dwayne Smith (39) and Suresh Raina (62) proved to be a fruitful one for Stephen Fleming’s men, as Raina’s wonderful half century off 32 balls, which included six sixes, put crucial runs on the board before Chahal got his second scalp, dismissing Raina (124/3). The Super Kings’ bowlers were in superb form as Iqbal Abdulla took two wickets of his own through Ravindra Jadeja (8) and Dwayne Bravo (5). Mahendra Singh Dhoni (13), Ravichandran Ashwin (5) and Mohit Sharma (2) cameoed for the visitors but failed to add sufficient runs as the Super Kings ended with 181/8 after 20 overs. The hosts’ chase got off to a dreadful start as a stunning catch from Faf Du Plessis helped Ashish Nehra claim the wickets of Manvinder Bisla (17) and then Rilee Rossouw (14) shortly after.
AB De Villiers (14) was run out before captain Virat Kohli’s half century put much needed runs on the board for the home team. He would be dismissed by Nehra who ended the match with outstanding figures of 4/10, with RCB needing 48 to win from 12 balls. Mitchell Starc (9) and David Wiese (22) put together a good partnership near the end but it wasn’t enough as the Chennai Super Kings won by 27 runs.
