Chennai Super Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals by 12 runs at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday, in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat first. Dhoni’s men had a slow start, when Dwayne Smith (6) and Suresh Raina (3) became the first two wickets to fall with only 15 runs on the board. However, things changed when a superb partnership of 101 between Brendon McCullum (81) and Faf Du Plessis (29) pushed the score to 116 runs.
A short downfall occured when Chris Morris took two wickets, dismissing Pawan Negi (2) and McCullum (81) with 129 runs on the board. Dhoni (13 not out) and Dwayne Bravo (15 not out) took the Super Kings to a final score of 157/5. Morris (3/19) was the pick of the bowlers.
Chennai needed to reach a target of 158 runs off 120 balls to win the game and were not successful in their run chase. Ajinkya Rahane (23) and Shane Watson (28) built a partnership of 37 runs before Rahane fell at the hands of Ankit Sharma. Steve Smith (4) followed with the score on 48.
A slip-up occurred with 130 on the board when James Faulkner(16) and Rajat Bhatia (0) were taken out by Sharma. The Royals finished on 145/9 to fall short by 12.
