The table-topping Chennai Super Kings defeated the bottom of the log Kings XI Punjab by seven wickets in their Indian Premier League encounter in Mohali on Saturday. After winning the toss and choosing to bat the Punjabi outfit got off to a slow start losing Wriddhiman Saha as early as the third over when he was dismissed for 15 by Pawan Negi (2/25). George Bailey joined Manan Vohra and managed to form a partnership and accumulate runs.
They got their side to 31/1 before the skipper nicked one to the keeper and he was followed by the other opener an over later to leave them on 35/3. With the new batsmen, Glenn Maxwell and Gurkeerat Singh, at the crease the wickets continued to fall as Singh (15) departed closely followed by his partner who was castled for just six. Axar Patel and David Miller put up some resistance before they both departed for 11 and 32 respectively as the batting side manged to post a total of 130/7 at the end of their innings.
In reply the log leaders lost their openers Michael Hussey and Brendon McCullum early in the innings to leave them on 10/2. Despite the early losses they were able to comfortably make the total with a solid 92-run partnership between Suresh Raina (41 not out) and Faf Du Plessis (55), as well as a cameo by the skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (25 not out) as they recorded a seven wicket victory and ensured top spot on the log table.
