Chelsea defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium in their English Premier League encounter on Sunday. The Gunners came into the game looking for the three points to take them back to the summit of the league while the Blues were looking to beat their London rivals for the second time this season. The game was open from the start as both teams were eager to score the opening goal.
Then on 17 minutes a good ball from Willian found Diego Cost running in behind and away from Per Mertesacker. The German defender slid in and took Costa, who was through on goal, down. Referee Mark Clattenburg had no choice but to send the big defender off.
It did not take long for the visitors to take advantage of their numerical advantage and on 22 minutes a driven cross from Branislav Ivanovic found Costa’s run into the six yard box and he made no mistake in stroking the ball past former team mate Petr Cech. Ivanovic almost made it 2-0 but his header was cleared off the line by Nacho Monreal on 42 minutes. The hosts had a big chance in first half stoppage time when a cross found Matthieu Flamini who attempted an audacious back heel flick instead of heading the ball and it flew over the bar.
The second half saw Arsene Wenger’s men try to play their way back into the game but it was always going to be an uphill battle with Guus Hiddink’s side happy with the 1-0 lead and not looking to push on for a second goal. As a result there were no real chances for either side in the second half. The game ended 1-0 and Chelsea continued their dominance over Arsenal.
