Goals from the newly-signed Diego Costa, Branislav Ivanovic and Andre Schuerrle in first half saw Chelsea open their English Premier League season with a 3-1 win over Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday. The home side took an early lead when Scott Arfield put the ball in the net after a pull back from Matt Taylor on 14 minutes. Costa responded a minute later with his first goal for the Blues and leveled the matter 1-1 in the 16th minute.
Jose Mourinho’s boys continued pressing to take the lead and Schuerrle made no mistake after a beautiful pass from Cesc Fabregas four minutes later to hand the London club a 2-1 advantage. The Clarets struggled to deal with the visitors’ attack, and sure enough Ivanovic, who was unmarked in the box, had it easy and made it 3-1. Arfield looked for his second goal of the night in the second half but his effort was easily blocked.
The hosts simply failed to penetrate the Chelsea defence. Didier Drogba replaced Eden Hazard on 84 minutes and came close to making a dream return but his volley went wide. The match ended in favor of Mourinho and gave his team an early lead on the overall table.
