Chelsea has advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Scunthorpe United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in London on Sunday. The Blues started the game well, and clearly meant business. In the 12th minute Diego Costa made it 1-0 after Branislav Ivanovic assisted him with a cross.
The Spaniard who was in the centre of the box hit a left foot finisher. The hosts were controlling the pace of the game and created more chances on target. In the 22nd minute Oscar missed a chance to capitalise as his powerful right foot shot missed and goes wide.
Scunthorpe had a few attempts on goal too. One noticeable moment was when Kevin Van Veen struck a left foot shot that missed to the left. In the 35th minute Scott Laird set up Luke Williams who took a right footed shot from outside the box, but it was saved by Thibaut Courtious. United looked more stimulated in the opening 20 minutes of the second stanza, as they tried by all means to net an equaliser.
However in the 67th minute Guus Hiddink’s side were on the score sheet once again. Second half substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek was assisted by Cesar Azpilicueta and the youngster cooly left footed the ball to the left corner of the goal net. Van Veen had a close effort for the visitors in the 72nd minute as he hit a long range right shot, but it missed to the left.
The Irons attacked desperately in the last 10 minutes of the game but were unable to make a breakthrough. Next for Scunthorpe will be a League One match against Blackpool on Saturday. As for the London club, they will be happy with the win aheahd of a Premier League fixtue against West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday.
