Chelsea scored four goals to ease past Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Uefa Champions League at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The hosts did not get the start they were looking for as goalkeeper Pedrag Rajkovic went in for the intercept, but brought down the flying Willian in the box as Eden Hazard missed a brilliant scoring opportunity from the penalty spot. In the 15th minute Willian’s free kick from 30 yards out missed everyone as it went straight into the net to put The Blues 1-0 ahead.
The home side launched attack after attack but was unable to convert them into goals. Diego Costa barged between two defenders and bore down on goal but a desperate defensive tackle by ? Ben Haim in the box saw him concede a penalty. Oscar was called upon to take the penalty and he made no mistake to put the London side 2-0 up going into the break.
Jose Mourinho’s charges started the second stanza where they left off with Ruben Loftus-Cheek looking lethal on attack. Thereafter, Cesc Fabregas clipped a ball towards the penalty spot, which found Costa and the Spaniard guided a lovely side-footed volley into the top corner from 14 yards out to put them 3-0 ahead. Maccabi had no reply for the Chelsea onslaught as brilliant counter-attacking football saw Fabregas follow up on a Loic Remy shot to score the fourth goal of the night.
Nosa Igiebor had a golden opportunity to score his first Champions League goal but couldn’t convert as Mourinho’s men recorded a comfortable 4-0 win to start their European adventure on a high note.
