An 80th minute penalty from Lerato Lamola secured a stunning 1 -0 away win for Bloemfontein Celtic against Bidvest Wits in the Absa Premiership in Johannesburg Friday evening. Siwelele started well and were awarded two free kicks in a promising opening 10 minutes but from then on Gavin Hunt’s side began to take control. The first real chance fell to the home side but Henrico Botes’ headed effort hit the crossbar.
The first half was a bit of a stop-start affair and was littered with corners and free kicks. No real chances occurred until two minutes from the break when Sibusiso Vilakazi headed narrowly wide and the score remained 0-0 at the break. For Wits three points would close the gap at the top to just seven points ahead of the Soweto Derby.
They needed to improve in the second half and started positively. In the 54th minute confusion in the Celtic defence nearly gifted the home side the lead but again Vilakazi could not convert. Both teams came into this match in good form and it was proving to be a really tight affair.
The game exploded into life in the 80th minute as the referee awarded the visitors a penalty. Siyabonga Nhlapo picked up his second yellow card and was sent off. Lamola stepped up and made no mistake giving his team a timely 1-0 lead.
In the final ten minutes the Clever Boys threw everything but the kitchen sink at Phunya Sele Sele and almost equalised in the 92nd minute but Christopher Katongo failed to score as Clinton Larsen’s lads left Gauteng with maximum points.
